Preston House

Austin, TX 2016

Preston House enlarges a modest existing structure to connect previously partitioned living spaces and provide a more generous patio and master bedroom suite. The addition is modest in appearance and provides spatial structure without overwhelming the material and spatial qualities of the existing home.

Rooms are organized along a central hall that springs from the front door: parlor, dining room, and a living room open to the expanded kitchen are perpendicular to the hall. These living spaces are at once connected and allow for easy movement and shared light but maintain the sheltering quality of discrete rooms. Extensive glazing and work surfaces create a spacious kitchen with a clear connection to the outdoors. The adjoining courtyard and garden are bounded on its other side by the extended wing of the home which contains an enlarged master bedroom.

White oak flooring continues through the home and ties together old and new. Walnut laminate clads new cabinetry, and full-height glazing allows for views of the newly landscaped garden – behind which the hand applied stucco of the addition forms a backdrop.
